Kenya is positioned in Eastern Africa and borders Tanzania, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, and Somalia. The people of Kenya value fresh foods. Common vegetables include: kale, spinach, tomatoes, potatoes, avocados, and other leafy greens. Beef and goat meat are common meats. They also have fish, chicken, and mutton, however they are more expensive. Since Kenya has such a tropical climate, pineapples, oranges, mangoes, pears, papaws, and other citrus fruits are easily grown in this area. Fruits are cheap, plentiful, and popular to the Kenyans. Typical ingredients found in the meals prepared by Kenyans include: rice, cornmeal, meat, wheat, and millet flour. Kenyans enjoy drinking tea, and cold beverages such as soda and juice. An average Kenyan family will eat ugali na sukama wiki or chapati na sukama wiki. Ugali is a stiff porridge made out of maize meal (white cornmeal). Sukama wiki is similar to collard greens and is usually boiled with onions and tomatoes. Chapatis are flat, round breads which resemble flat tortillas. Both ugali na sukama wiki and chapati na sukama wiki do not require any silverware. You will simply pick up the sukama wiki with either the ugali or the chapati. After dinner, a beverage is served. Most often, tea is made with milk and sugar. Other times, it may be coffee or water. Dessert isn't usually served after dinner. If it is, some fruit is served like bananas, pineapples, papayas, or mangoes.
The people of Kenya usually have only one meal a day. This meal is dinner. Dinner is usually served in what we call the living room. After you are seated, the hostess goes to each person with a pitcher of water, a plastic bowl, a bar of soap, and a towel so that everyone an wash their hands before they eat. No matter where you are in Kenya, everyone washes their hands before they eat. Even in restaurants, everyone washes their hands in a sink with a bar of soap before they eat their meal. After everyone has washed their hands, a blessing is said. Then, the hostess will serve everyone a portion of the dinner.
